When former Sugababes singer Keisha Buchanan listed examples of successful Black and Brown-skinned artists, they were all American: Lauryn Hill, Mary J Blige… The first time Nao performed at Glastonbury, it was as a backing singer, and while she has managed to succeed as a solo artist, many others have not. It’s a situation that feels particularly endemic to the UK.
